First, they are not the same project
KouriChat is developed by its own team and published as an open-source repository on GitHub, describing itself as a more realistic emotional companionship program based on large language models. KOORI is a separate company and product at koori.world and koori.ai. We have no affiliation with KouriChat and are not describing its roadmap or quality. If you came here looking for KouriChat specifically, the official repository is linked in the sources at the bottom of this page.
If instead you were looking for apps like Kouri AI because you want a character companion that just works, read on.
What a configurable open-source client means
Open-source companion projects are usually distributed as software you download and run yourself. According to its public repository and release notes, KouriChat is written in Python, its recent rebuilt version includes a configuration page for connecting a language model and a memory system, and setup help is offered through its community. That kind of design gives you a lot of control: you can choose the model, adjust settings and inspect the code.
The tradeoff is that you are responsible for setup. Depending on how you configure it, that may involve installing software, choosing an AI model provider or gateway, and keeping things updated. Some people enjoy exactly that. We are not claiming every KouriChat setup requires a paid key or any specific provider; the point is that a self-run client is configured by you, while a hosted platform makes those choices for you.
What a hosted character platform means
KOORI is the hosted kind. You open the site, sign in with Google or Apple, and every model for chat, voice, pictures and video is already connected. There is nothing to install and no external API key to paste. The cost of running those models is covered by a free tier, memberships and credits instead of a bill from a model provider.
Hosting also lets KOORI build features that are hard to assemble yourself: a visual character creator with consistent portraits, a shared Discover library of community characters, animated Live Calls and a video pipeline that turns a chat moment into a Reel with your cast.
A balanced comparison
The table below compares the two approaches based on public information. KouriChat details come from its own repository; KOORI details describe the current beta. Both can change, so treat this as orientation rather than a final verdict.
| Tool | Best for | Strength | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| KouriChat | People who want to run and customize their own companion program | Open source, configurable model and settings, community support | You handle installation, model connection and updates yourself |
| KOORI | People who want ready-to-use character worlds in a browser | No setup or API key, visual creator, voice, Live Call and Reels | Less low-level control; heavier features use credits or a plan |
Voice and Live Calls
On KOORI, many characters have a custom voice, and characters whose call setup is complete support Live Call, a real-time spoken conversation with an animated portrait of the character. Call setup works best with a clear, single-character portrait, and if it fails KOORI explains why, such as two characters in one picture. Call time comes from your plan or credits. A regular phone call option is marked coming soon and is not live.
For a self-hosted client, voice depends on what that project supports and what you connect. Check its own documentation rather than assuming.
Reels: when a conversation becomes a film
The biggest difference you will feel is video. KOORI Reels take the characters from your story, plan a few shots for the moment you describe and produce a short film up to about a minute, with voices and optional captions. You see the credit cost before filming.
Reels are optional. Plenty of people only chat. But if you have ever wanted to see a scene you wrote with a character actually play out, this is the part a text-only client cannot easily replace.
Mobile and getting started in minutes
KOORI runs in mobile browsers on iPhone and Android and can be added to your home screen. Your characters and chats sync across devices with your account. If you want a companion on your phone tonight without touching a terminal, that is the main reason to choose a hosted platform.
From search to first chat
- Step 1: Open the site. Go to koori.world on your phone or computer.
- Step 2: Sign in. Use Google or Apple; existing email accounts still work.
- Step 3: Finish onboarding. Confirm your age and country so the right safety settings apply.
- Step 4: Pick a character. Browse Discover by genre and art style.
- Step 5: Start talking. Send a first message and let the character lead a little.
- Step 6: Make your own. When an idea appears, open Create and build an original character.
What to look for in any AI character companion
Whichever route you take, a few questions separate a companion you will keep using from one you abandon after a week. Does the character stay consistent when you disagree with it, or does it simply agree with everything? Does it remember the details that matter to your story, and is the app honest that memory has limits? Can you shape the character yourself, or only pick from a fixed list?
Also look at the practical side. Where are your conversations stored, and can you take your characters with you across devices? What does it cost once the free part runs out, and is that cost shown before you spend it? Are there safety settings appropriate for your age? A self-run client answers many of these through your own configuration, while a hosted platform answers them through its plans, policies and design. Knowing which questions matter to you makes the choice much easier.
Which should you choose?
Choose a configurable open-source client like KouriChat if you like tinkering, want to pick your own model, and are comfortable with installation and community troubleshooting. Choose KOORI if you want original characters with portraits and voices, a community library, Live Calls and Reels, and you would rather spend your time on the story than on setup.
There is no wrong answer, and nothing stops you from trying both.
KouriChat alternative FAQ
Is KOORI the same as KouriChat or Kouri AI?
No. They are separate, unrelated projects with similar sounding names.
Does KOORI need an API key?
No. KOORI is hosted, so the AI models are included. You pay through a free tier, memberships or credits.
Does KouriChat always need an API key?
We do not make that claim. It depends on how you configure it; consult the KouriChat repository and community for current requirements.
Can I make videos with KOORI characters?
Yes. Reels turn a chosen moment into a short film with your cast, using credits shown before filming.
Is there a KOORI app to download?
KOORI runs in the browser on any device and can be added to your home screen like an app.
Try zero-setup character chat
If the hosted route sounds right, the fastest test is one conversation. Pick a character in Discover, or describe your own in Create, and see how it feels in a few minutes.
